ARTHRITIS PAIN MANAGEMENT Arthritis in pets is very similar to the disease in humans. It is a condition where your pet's joints become inflamed. As the inflammation increases, the joints become swollen and this results in pain, stiffness, and immobility. We know that recognizing and alleviating pain in animals is good patient care.
Arthritis symptoms range across a wide spectrum from mild to severe. Watching your pet carefully as you interact with him and knowing the warning signs, you as pet owner can detect changes and symptoms early. This allows our veterinarians to begin treatment before symptoms advance to a more severe and debilitating level.
The key to proper treatment is to obtain an accurate diagnosis. A combination of medical history, physical exam, radiographs, and blood tests are required to make an accurate diagnosis and to provide the appropriate medical therapy. Each pet is unique and every treatment program is different. After completing your pet's arthritis screening, Dr. Violet or Dr. Kozel will customize a treatment program to best meet your pet's special requirements.
Treatment may include dietary changes, exercise, drug therapy, and weight management. Together, these elements can help relieve joint stress and build muscle strength to help your pet remain happy and comfortable. |
BATHING AND GROOMING | Regular grooming of your pet is essential to good health. Not only does it help your pet feel fresh and revitalized, but it prevents infectious skin irritation, helps prevent excessive itching and licking, and controls ticks and fleas. Our knowledgeable and dedicated staff of groomers offers full service grooming for all breeds of dogs and cats with a variety of special services. We offer everything from a brush out to a customized groom. If scratching is a problem, our medicated baths contain soothing agents that stop the itching. Our experienced professional groomers can help you determine the best possible care for your pet. |
BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE | Illness doesn't always have a physical cause. With a thorough behavioral consultation, we can help determine the cause of such disorders as separation anxiety and obsessive behavior, and then develop a treatment regimen for the client. |
DENTAL CARE Dental disease is the most common illness encountered in veterinary medicine today and affects 9 out of 10 pets. Unfortunately it is also the most undertreated disease. Pets often go for years with painful gingivitis or even severe tooth root abscesses without noticeable clinical signs to the owner. Dental disease puts tremendous demands on your pet's organs, weakening the liver, kidney, and heart. This additional stress can affect your pet's happiness and shorten life expectancy.
Tartar and dental disease cannot be removed by brushing, but requires professional veterinary treatment. This is done under anesthesia. There are different anesthetic protocols used depending on your pet's age and health. Our doctors may run pre-anesthesia blood, urine, and EKG tests to determine the best anesthesia protocol. Your pet is usually able to go home the same day of the dental cleaning procedure.
Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. We use modern and safe ultrasound to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line. Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup. |
EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE | Please call us at once for any emergency during regular business hours. Emergencies are always given priority over routine procedures. In addition, we use the services of a local, fully staffed emergency center that's open 24 hours a day. After hours emergencies are referred to Columbus Veterinary Emergency Service at 300 East Wilson Bridge Road with phone number 614-846-5800. Their website is www.medvet-cves.com. |

HEARTWORM AND INTESTINAL PARASITE PREVENTION Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in dogs. The disease is spread from dog to dog by any one of over 70 species of mosquitoes. Much of the damage occurs before there are any outward signs of the disease. Therefore, prevention is the key element in protecting your dog.
Roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms are internal parasites that not only compromise your dog's health, but can also compromise your family's health.
Preventing heartworm disease and controlling hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections are essential in maintaining your pet's good health. Our office prescribes Interceptor Flavor Tabs for heartworm prevention and internal parasite control. It comes in 6 month and 12 month supplies according to weight. We recommend giving Interceptor to your dog year monthly all year long. |
HOSPITALIZATION We know your pet will feel more at ease with you at home, but sometimes sick patients need services that can only be performed in the hospital. We strive to keep the length of hospital stays as brief as possible.
While in the hospital your pet will be in our general hospital ward. If there is a concern of contagious disease, he/she will stay in the isolation ward. Our wards are quiet and comfortable with soft linens. Cats are kept in comfortable kennels and ambulatory dogs are walked at least several times a day. A veterinary technician is assigned to monitor the condition of each patient, to provide special needs, and to give caring attention.
Your pet's doctor will call you often to inform you of your pet's progress. Additionally, our veterinary technicians are available to answer any questions or concerns if you should call. |
IMMUNIZATION AND WELLNESS CARE We strive to prevent illness whenever possible. After completing a yearly comprehensive physical examination, our veterinarians will evaluate your pet's age, breed, and lifestyle to determine the risk of potential disease. After discussing your pet's needs, we will design a preventive health care and vaccination plan that is best for your pet. The time and effort invested in wellness programs has rewards for both pets and owners. Our wellness programs are designed specifically for your pet and include: comprehensive physical exam; internal parasite testing; heartworm and flea control; vaccination program; spay and neuter surgeries; and specialized blood tests for all life stages. |
INDIVIDUALIZED HEALTH CARE PLANS After completing a yearly comprehensive physical examination, our veterinarian will evaluate your pet's age, breed, and lifestyle to determine the risk of potential disease. MICROCHIPPING | Home Again Pet Microchip Identification System and Recovery Service is the most complete nationwide system for recovering lost or stolen pets. It utilizes a tiny microchip, the size of a grain of rice, which is implanted between the animals' shoulder blades. This procedure takes just seconds and is relatively painless, and is recommended for companion pets of all species, breeds, and ages. Individual numbers are registered in the national database managed by the Home Again Pet Recovery Service. When a lost pet arrives at a participating animal shelter or veterinary clinic, a Universal Scanner is used to identify the unique encoded number on the implanted microchip and the owner is identified and contacted immediately. This recovery system has helped reunite thousands of pets with their families. We can implant the Home Again Microchip in your pet to increase the chances of a safe recovery. |

PET BOARDING We realize there is no place like home for your pets and that we cannot duplicate the environment to which they are accustomed. However, it is our purpose to provide a safe, confortable, and caring environment under the supervision of our veterinary staff.
Our canine guests are housed in fiberglass cages or runs. The well-lighted environment is appropriately ventilated and maintained at a comfortable temperature. Each cage is regularly provided with fresh water and properly cleaned and sanitized as needed. Your "best friend" is continually monitored throughout the day to ensure his/her health and happiness. Outside exercise is provided twice a day.
Feline guests are housed in our Cat Ward. They are provided with lambswool fuzzies for comfort in their individual cages. An indoor play area satisfies your cat's desire to play and to enjoy a little freedom. Each cage is properly maintained with fresh water and sanitation. Your cat is continually monitored throughout the day to ensure his/her health and happiness.
We have learned from experience that most pets staying with us actually show little interest in personal items. We request that you not bring small toys, rawhides, bedding or dishes from home.
We provide the following for your pet during his/her stay:
- High quality food. We find just the right one to meet your pet's needs. You may bring food for your pet only if it is a prescription diet prescribed by your veterinarian, or if your pet is sensitive to a diet change.
- Food and water dishes.
- Lambswool fuzzies and blankets for bedding. This will insure that the bedding will always be clean and dry.
Hospital services can be performed while your pet is boarded. These include dental prophylaxis, grooming, surgery, vaccinations, and training. Please schedule these services when making boarding reservations.
In order for us to safely board your pets, we do require that your pets have current immunizations (within the past year) before or upon admission for boarding.
Dogs are required to have the following immunizations:

RADIOLOGY Our X-Ray machine and automatic processor produce the highest quality radiographs, available immediately for the doctor to review with you. |
SENIOR WELLNESS Pets age at a rate of five to seven times the human aging process, so regular exams are important to your aging pet's health and happiness. As your pet ages, you will notice subtle changes. It is important to understand normal aging versus abnormal changes in your pet's health. We can educate you in what normal changes to expect. We can also help you learn the best ways to attend to your senior pet's needs, particularly in veterinary care and nutritional requirements. Working together, we can have a positive influence on the quality and longevity of your pet's life.
Our doctors recommend a senior health screen exam every six months for all pets over seven years of age. This usually involves a laboratory analysis of your pet's bodily functions. Tests help diagnose blood disorders, kidney and liver disease, diabetes, infection, thyroid, and other hormonal problems before they become apparent. Radiographs can help diagnose heart disease, cancer, and osteoarthritis.
Although senior pets may not have the energy of youth, they still have plenty of love and companionship to offer. Make sure your pet's senior years are happy and healthy by providing the extra attention and veterinary care needed. |
